The move is in anticipation of the Future Long-Range Assault Aircraft to come.
The U.S. Army intends to trim its Black Hawk fleet of active-duty helicopters by 157. The service anticipates the Future Long-Range Assault Aircraft (FLRAA) that will be replacing them in the early 2030s.
“It’s really about balancing the current readiness with the procurement and fielding in the future,” Major General Mac McCurry, commander of the Army Aviation Center of Excellence, said. “As we looked at our utility fleet specifically, we had grown that fleet since early in the 2000s by over 300 aircraft.”
The military branch had added to the fleet during operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. The service will remove the older models, reducing the overall age of the fleet and lowering the maintenance required.
